Established in 2013 in the heart of Shakujii-koen, Nerima-ku, Tokyo, the SIO was founded by the esteemed violinist and conductor, Kunito Nishitani. With his background as an adjunct faculty of music at New York University and his extensive study in the U.S., Nishitani has brought his wealth of knowledge and experience to the SIO, guiding its members to constantly strive for musical excellence.
But the SIO is not just about making beautiful music; it’s about the joyous journey towards mastery, the shared smiles between rehearsals, and the friendships formed in the pursuit of our shared passion. As the SIO’s motto suggests, “What if you practice with passions and smile together, surprisingly, you may improve dynamically!”
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced musician, the SIO offers an inclusive and supportive environment for all skill levels. You’ll have the chance to learn from and play alongside professional musicians, who share their expertise and help each member achieve their personal best.
Our orchestra is proud to have been rapidly progressing since our inception, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our members. Every year, the SIO holds an annual concert around May or June, featuring well-loved classics as well as original compositions. In our past concerts, we’ve performed Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, and we were honored to be joined by Prof. Rudolf Haken, a renowned 5-string violist from the United States, who performed his Concerto for 5-String Viola.
